Mount Gilboa

The Gilboa (Hebrew גלבוע ), even mountains of Gilboa (Hebrew הר הגלבוע ), is a mountain range in northern Israel on the border with the West Bank.

General Information

The mountain range of the Gilboa rises due east of the Jezreel Valley to a height of 508 m; it extends in a southeasterly direction for about 20 kilometers. The area of ​​Beit She'an east of the mountain ridge is already below sea level, so that the absolute height is about 600 m. At Gilboa, nature reserves and national parks, including the famous Park Gan haSchloscha are ( " Garden of the Three " ) or Sachne, in the spring hot springs. Historical significance

According to the Biblical story, King Saul gathered his army in battle against the Philistines at Gilboa. The oracle of the dead of En Dor told him a defeat ahead that actually occurred: King Saul's sons - including his son Jonathan - fell, he fell on his sword. His body was the biblical reportedly hung by the Philistines to the city walls of Beth Shean ( 1 Samuel 28-31).

In 1260, in the mountains of Gilboa succeeded the Mameluckengeneral Baibars, repulse invading Mongols and then to become Sultan of Egypt and Syria itself.
