Mount Gilead is a village in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The place that has according to the census of 2000 3290 inhabitants, is the county seat ( county seat ) of the Morrow County.

History

After 1817, the first white settlers arrived in the area, the place that was still in Marion County at the time, was initially referred to as Whetsom and Youngstown. 1832 known as Mount Gilead, the town was officially registered in 1839 as a community. In 1848, Mount Gilead was determined at that time about 400 inhabitants to the administrative seat of the newly established Morrow County.

Middle of the 19th century were some residents who opposed the slavery of mostly religious reasons, engaged in the Underground Railroad. Around 1880 Mount Gilead had 1216 inhabitants. In 1919 the site of the U.S. government a victory column was built to commemorate donated in mind that more war bonds were purchased in Morrow County during the First World War in relation to per capita income than in any other county in the United States.

Due to the corresponding embossing of the Morrow County remained until the 20th century, agriculture is the main industry in Mount Gilead, was the turn of the millennium the most populated city of the County.
