Mount Nantai

The Nantai (Japanese男 体 山, san ) is a mountain in Nikko National Park in central Honshu, the main island of Japan. It is 2484 meters high.

The stratovolcano is located on the northern shore of Lake chuzenji. The lake was formed when a lava flow of Nantai blocked the river Daiya. In the presence of the lava flow is overcome by the Kegon Falls. In two subsequent outbreaks slag was ejected and were formed pyroclastic flows. Another outbreak dacite lava flow from an existing developed. The last known eruption around 10,000 years ago was preceded by about 3,000 years of dormancy. In this outbreak there was another pyroclastic flows.

The mountain is popular with hikers; a path to the summit is to start with a goal of Chugushi shrine at the foot of the mountain. The gate is open from May 5 to October 25. In Chugushi Shrine and Nikko Futarasan shrine of the kami of the mountain, Onamuchi no Mikoto is worshiped.
