Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo ( Hebrew: הַר נְבוֹ, Har Nəvō, Arabic جبل نيبو, Jabal Nibu ) in the mountains Abǎrim lies in Jordan, he's offshoot of that plateau, which slopes down to the dead sea. Mount Nebo with a height of 808 m offers a view of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Israel.

Religious significance

The religious significance of this mountain was called by Pope Benedict XVI. described in his pilgrimage to the Holy Places 9 May 2009 in the following manner: " From this holy mountain Moses directs our attention [ ... ] to the fulfillment of all the promises of God in Christ. "

Nebo Church

On the top of the mountain, a church was built in 393 and since then reshaped again and again. The same ancient bishopric is now the titular Neve ( Nebo ). In the 7th century it was a very popular destination for pilgrims. From the original church only a few remnants are left - stone blocks and parts of the mosaic floor.

The present church on the Nebo is owned by the Catholic Franciscan Order. In her mosaics with hunting scenes, lions and gazelles are issued. The baptistery dating from 531 AD contains a mosaic from the 6th century, also with representations of animals. In addition, a modern monastery for the Franciscans was built, which also hosts archaeologists.
