Mount Noorat

BWf1

The Mount Noorat is probably the largest volcanic crater in Australia, which is not filled with water. It is 6 km from the small town Noorat at Terang away in Victoria.

Description

The Mount Noorat is one of the largest volcanoes in the Newer Volcanics Province of Victoria. It rises 310 meters above sea level, has a diameter of 400 m and its crater is 150 m deep. The crater is filled with water. To the main crater there are more peaks and dips that may indicate more volcanic eruptions. The located in deeper layers of volcanic tuff indicates eruptions that took place as explosions when lava came in contact with water. The tuff, which has been deposited in the west of the volcano, is mined in quarries. The volcanic mountain is composed of several layers of tuff and lava flows, in which many lherzolites and xenoliths are.

Aboriginal

The Mount Noorat is named after the Elder Ngoora by the Aborigines of Kirrae Wuurong. He has great meaning for them because it was a trading place for spears, stone axes and other goods.
