Mount ÅŒyama (Kanagawa)

The Ōyama (Japanese大 山) is a mountain range on the southwestern edge of the Tanzawa Mountains in the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa.

History

Revered religious early in its history: Thanks to its reminiscent of Mount Fuji regular form of Ōyama was ( " great mountain " literally). Since the Hōreki era (1751-1764) to pilgrimages delighted to Ōyama and situated on its southern slope Shinto shrine Ōyama - Afuri -jinja great popularity. To this end Ōyama - Pilgrimages ( Ōyama -michi, Ōyama - dō or Ōyama Kaido ) were applied from different directions. In the Edo period, pilgrimages were to Ōyama often combined with trips to Enoshima.

Location

The Ōyama rises abruptly from the southern Kantō level and is, therefore, clearly visible from the Tokyo -Yokohama metropolitan center even with moderate visibility. From its summit there is a view over the southern Kanto plain and the Sagami Bay. From the rest of the Tanzawa Mountains of Ōyama is separated by the 761 m high Yabitsu Pass.

Development and ascent

From the southeast performs a funicular that overcomes a distance of 0.8 kilometers 278 height meters, situated at 700 m altitude to lower Shrine (下 社) of Afuri -jinja. The valley station of the cable car can be reached by bus from the train station Isehara the Odawara Line. Between the bus station and the valley station of numerous small shops selling local specialties and handicraft products found. From the lower shrine leads a hiking and pilgrimage route to the summit, on which is the main shrine of Afuri -jinja. From a south-westerly direction goes from the Yabitsu Pass (bus service to Hadano ) leads to the summit, from the east, hiking trails lead from belonging to Atsugi Kōtakuji -onsen or Nanasawa -onsen on the top.
