View of Nea Penteli to the Pendelimassiv

The Penteli ( Greek: Πεντέλη, transkr also Penteli, . Pentelicon ancient Greek oros Πεντελικὸν ὄρος, Brilēssos Βριλησσός or Brilēttos Βριληττός ) is a cone-shaped on all sides of steep mountain of 1,108 m northeast of Athens and the second highest mountain in Attica.

The name derives originally from the ancient demos Pentele.

The mountain is internationally famous for its white marble Pentelischen, which was also used for the construction of the Athens Acropolis.

" For a long time makes Apollo the summer blue, Pendelis shiny marble to erhöhn. "

Today's slight discoloration this marble of ancient buildings does not correspond to the yellowish beige / sand colored the original white color, but arose in the course of centuries by weather influence.

A road leads from Athens suburb of Nea Penteli or Kifissia past the monastery Moni Pendelis and abandoned quarries on the summit, which is home to a telecommunications station. A recommended route starts in the north at the summer resort of Dionysus. On bright days, the view from the top extends north to Mount Olympus and south to the Cretan Mount Ida (Peter Gößler in Prussian Yearbooks 119 (1905 ), p 453).

After the mountain the Attic municipality Penteli is named.
