Mount Royal Funicular Railway
The Funicular du Mont Royal ( Mount Royal Funicular engl. ) was a funicular railway in Montreal, which led to the Mont Royal. The base station was located on the Avenue Duluth, close to George -Étienne Cartier monument, the hill station at an observation deck near the 233 meter high summit.
1876 Frederick Law Olmsted had created on the Montreal mountain Parc du Mont -Royal. He had made a point that the park should be accessible only on foot. But after a few years, the demand was for a more convenient access. Finally, a funicular was built in 1884. Its drive was carried out by a steam engine in the base station. For security reasons, the funicular was in 1918 decommissioned and dismantled two years later.
