The Mount Royal Range is a mountain country in New South Wales, Australia, an area in the Hunter River region, about 90 miles from Newcastle.

History

The mountains of the Mount Royal Range are of volcanic origin. They were the traditional territory of the Aboriginal Biripi, Worimi, Geawegal, Wonaruah and Ungooroo who have been displaced by the Europeans during the colonization. The Mount Mackenzie was the site of a violent confrontation between Europeans and Aborigines.

The European colonization in the 18th century was promoted by the structure of timber and livestock and gold discoveries. In the 20th century, first recreation seekers came to the area in the 1920s and 1930s began the development of tourism of the Barrington Tops and during the Second World War, there were protests against the further economic development and against road construction in mountain areas. The first efforts to establish a National Park, there were in the 1950s. This meant that two small nature reserves at Gloucester Tops and in the area of the Williams River were built. 1969 saw the founding of the Barrington Tops National Park.

Location

The Mount Royal Range lies on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range. The mountain area is drained by the Hunter River and Manning River flowing towards the east coast of New South Wales. The differences in height in the mountain area are erhebluch, ranging from 200 up to 1586 meters. The Barrington plateau separates the catchment area of the upper Hunter River and its tributaries from the watershed to the east.
