Mount Sneffels

Mount Sneffels is a 4312 meters ( 14,150 ft) high mountain in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located about eight kilometers west of the town of Ouray in the same county in the Reserve Mount Sneffels Wilderness of the northern San Juan Mountains. The area is part of the Uncompahgre National Forest. Mount Sneffels is one of 86 so-called " Fourteeners " of the U.S., so one of the mountains which are high above 14,000 feet.

Southeast below the summit, the Yankee Boy Basin; here stems from the Sneffels Creek, which flows later in the Uncompahgre River.

History

Mount Sneffels was named after the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökul as the area of the western flank is somewhat reminiscent of the appearance of a volcanic crater.

Seen from the Dallas - watershed at Colorado State Highway 62, Mount Sneffels is today probably one of the most photographed mountains in Colorado.

Routes to the summit

The two most commonly used way to the summit start on the south side of the mountain: The main route starts in Yankee Boy Basin and follows from here a creek bed. Another path leads from the Blue Lakes pass over a mountain ridge to the top.
