Mount Stromlo

Location of Mount Stromlo in the Australian Capital Territory

Mount Stromlo is a 770 meter high hill in Australia. It is located approximately 11 kilometers west of the center of Canberra, at the edge of the borough Weston Creek. He is known as the site of the renowned Mount Stromlo Observatory, which is operated by the Australian National University. In the vicinity of the Cotter River, which is dammed by three dams and is the main drinking water supply for the city is located.

The forest on Mount Stromlo completely burned down in the devastating bushfires in January 2003. The fire also destroyed the observatory and the water reservoir.

Before the fire of 2003 were on the Mount Stromlo some of the best and oldest mountain bike circuits in Australia. This was until 2006 been repaired by the association Canberra Off- Road Cyclists. From 2007 to 2009 here the Australian Mountain Bike National Championships will take place. The Canberra Off- Road Cyclists have applied the cycling federation UCI to carry out the Mountain Bike World Championships in 2008, but the contract was awarded to Val di Sole in Italy.
