Mount Takahe

The Mount Takahe is an inactive shield volcano in Marie Byrd Land in western Antarctica.

Analyzed rock samples of the 3460 m high Mount Takahe consisted of basanite, Benmoreit, Mugearit, Hawaii t and trachyte.

The mountain was probably among those who discovered the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd from overflights of the United States Antarctic Service ( USAS ) in February 1940.

Was named the volcano, ie like a bird of New Zealand, in December 1957 by members of a research group. " Takahe " was the nickname of the LC -47, an aircraft of the U.S. Navy, which provided the group near the mountain with supplies and air reconnaissance enabled to detect viable routes.
