Mount Terror (Antarctica)

Mount Terror, left in the background Mount Erebus

Mount Terror is a large extinct shield volcano that forms the eastern part of the Ross Island. He is mostly covered with ice and snow.

It is the second largest of the three volcanoes that make up the Ross Island and is exceeded by about 20 km west past Mount Erebus. The predominantly basaltic volcanic loose material composition existing volcanic cones on the flanks has numerous secondary craters. The rocks of the summit region have not yet been explored, but age dating of samples from deeper regions gave an age of 1.75 to 0.82 million years ago. A volcanic activity more recently could not be found at Mount Terror.

The volcano was named by James Clark Ross after the HMS Terror in 1841, the second ship of the expedition fleet. His flagship was eponymous for the Mount Erebus.

The first ascent of the 3230 meter high mountain, followed in 1959 by a New Zealand group.
