Mount Vernon ( Mt Vernon abbreviated ) is a city in Jefferson County in the U.S. state of Illinois with 16,269 inhabitants ( 2000).
Location
The city is located 119 km south-east of St. Louis, 65 km north of Marion, 71 km north-east of Carbondale, 94 miles south-west of Effingham and 124 km north- west of Evansville.
History
Mount Vernon was founded by Zadok Casey. The name "Mount Vernon " comes from George Washington's estate near Alexandria, Virginia, which in turn was named after the British naval hero Edward Vernon.
Economy and Transport
Economy
The economy is dominated by small companies and numerous catering establishments, whereby large companies as the central warehouse of the pharmacy chain Walgreens and the Continental Tire plant in Mount Vernon are located. Also to be found in Mt Vernon some retail stores such as Kroger, Walmart Supercenter and Aldi. Furthermore, the shopping center Time Square Mall in Mount Vernon.
Traffic
Mount Vernon is tied to both the Interstate 57 ( north-south direction) and to Interstate 64 ( east-west direction).
The nearest international airport is Lambert -Saint Louis International Airport in St. Louis. Also in Mount Vernon itself, there is an airport, it is however used for private and pleasure purposes.
