Mount Vernon is a city in the American state of Ohio. It is the county seat of Knox County.

Geography

Mount Vernon is located in the middle of Ohio, in the Northeastern United States. The Kokosing River and U.S. Highway 36 run through the city.

History

The city was founded in 1805 by Joseph Walker, Thomas B. Patterson and Benjamin Butler. Mount Vernon was named after the country residence of the first President of the United States, George Washington. The first inhabitants of the city came from the states of Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Three years later, in 1808, the Knox County was founded.

Opened in 1851, the Woodward Opera House, is the oldest free-standing opera house in the United States today.

Economy and infrastructure

1833 engineering company Cooper Industries was founded in Mount Vernon, now one of the oldest existing large companies in the United States. Another resident company is Rolls- Royce Energy Systems, a subsidiary of Rolls- Royce.
