Geology

The main crater Vulki Mulki has a diameter of 300 m and a depth of about 150 m, it houses five vents.

Volcanic activity

The Yasur is for at least 800 years, constantly active.

In August 1774 James Cook landed after night in a red glow was observed in the clouds, in a bay east of the volcano. An intentional ascent of the volcano was prevented by residents because of a taboo: the inhabitants of the surrounding villages believe that the volcano is the place where people's souls remain after death.

The normal activity of Yasur volcano consists of Strombolian eruptions and moderate vulcanian. At present, the southern vent, which is immediately adjacent to the visitors' area, the most active. Average occur every 3 minutes explosions.

Last time in the fall of 2002, increased activity of the volcano were recorded. Later the number of eruptions, however, fell back to the normal 500 per day.

In May 2010, particularly strong strombolian explosions lava rocks were flying up on the outer flank of the volcano, so that the ascent to the crater had to be closed temporarily.

Monitoring

In October 1992, a seismic station was set up.

Tourism
