Okama crater lake at Zaō

The Zaō (Japanese蔵 王 山Zaō -san ) is a complex volcano in Yamagata Prefecture on the border of Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. At its foot lies the place Zaō - Onsen.

As a volcanic group of Zaō is mainly composed of layer volcanoes, but also from Lavadomen and tuff cones. From a historical time are numerous reports of volcanic eruptions, which date back to the 8th century AD. Most of these outbreaks were originated from Okama, a crater containing a lake with a strongly acidic water ( pH of 1.3 ).

The highest point is the lava dome Kumano with 1841 meters. It is located in the ski resort Yamagata Zaō Onsen with the used for international competitions Zaō hill. The Kumano is known for Juhyō (树 冰), with a layer of ice covered trees, reminiscent of the snow monster. The humidity of the air masses coming from Russia remains on Zaō hanging and freezes fixed on the trees.

1979 11 Interski Congress was held in Zaō.

With the peaks Jizo and it forms a ring-tailed lemur is about 36 km from north to south, extending mountain range. The many small lakes in the summer, it is also a popular place for hiking.
