Mount Zion Abbey

Mount Sion is a Prämonstratenserinnenkloster in the village Uetliburg in the municipality of Gommiswald in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen.

History

The name is derived from the name of Zion the city of God for Jerusalem. Uetliburg been since the Middle Ages due to its location on the pilgrimage route to Maria Bildstein and a place of pilgrimage Einsiedeln. 1761 was carried out by the initiative of the priest Joseph Helg ( 1721-1787 ), the founding of the convent. Mount Sion is now the only monastery of the Premonstratensian order in Switzerland, which is still operated as such. From 1774 to 1806 the monastery was founded here from Mount Tabor in Jestetten castle.

Attractions

1763-1786 the elongated monastery was built on a terrace high above the Linthebene. Interesting is particularly the monastery church in the late Baroque style. The ceiling painting by an unknown artist inspired by the Rococo style and remarkable quality. The three altars date from the construction of the church. The high altar has an altarpiece with the Sacred Heart design and hosts since 1827 the relics of St. Venturinus. Dates of the existing of 14 paintings baroque Stations of the Cross from 1769. The consecrated in 1765 Loreto chapel is completed by a neo-Baroque altarpiece from 1925.
