Mountain Province

Mountain Province ( Tagalog: Lalawigang Bulubundukin ) is a landlocked province of the Philippines on the island of Luzon in the Cordillera Central. Clockwise from the south it borders on Ifugao, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, and Isabela. The name is also abbreviated as " Mt Province". The province is part of the Cordillera Administrative Region.

It has 148 661 inhabitants and an area of 2097.3 km ². Capital is Bontoc, Sagada tourist known, however, is with its rice terraces and limestone caves. This despite the petroglyphs of Bontoc are among the oldest cultural monuments in the Philippines.

In the near Bontoc is the active volcano Patoc and in the southwest of the province, Mount Data, the surrounds of the Mount Data National Park.

The province is predominantly inhabited by Igorot. According to the 2000 census, 52% of the population Kankanai, 13.6% and 12% Balangao Ibontoc.

The river flows through the Chico province from south to north. In the west the Cordillera rise.

History

The Spaniards called the area formerly called " La Montanosa " because of its mountains. 1908 directed the new American rulers a time greater Mountain Province. It was divided in 1966 into the present Mountain Province, Benguet, Ifugao Kalinga Apayao and.

Under the dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the then largest artificial lake of Asia was planned at Chico. He would have destroyed the livelihoods of many tribes in the province - 100,000 people had been resettled. The project could be prevented, but the experiences with it have left a great distrust of the central government in many residents. This also led to armed resistance of the Cordillera People's Democratic Front ( CPDF ), a member organization of the National Democratic Front (NDF), was organized. The " Cordillera People's Liberation Army" ( CPLA ) is one of them split fraction.
