Cape mountain zebras in the Mountain Zebra National Park

The Mountain Zebra National Park ( German: Mountain Zebra National Park ) is located 235 km north of Port Elizabeth, near the South African town of Cradock. It was established as a protected area for the Cape Mountain Zebra, one subspecies of mountain zebra.

The Cape Mountain Zebra is one of the rarest large mammals. It differs from other zebra species, among others, by its shorter mane and his life in small family groups. The protection in this reserve succeeds so well that now thrives here a larger population and zebra families could be given to other game reserves.

Fauna

In April 2013 lions were reintroduced in the park that were about 130 years previously eradicated in the area. A predator - safe fence, which limits the national park, prevented since 2007 that the predators can reach adjacent land for settlement. In addition to the Cape mountain zebra are here to watch a whole lot of antelopes, zebras, Cape buffalo, black rhino, brown hyena, aardvark, bear baboons, vervet monkeys, bush pigs and some of the African cats. The largest are cheetahs and lions, who were settled here again. Also, here are observed caracal. Among the species of antelope, the eland is the largest. Alongside this greater kudu, mountain reedbuck, South African Gemsbok South African Red Hartebeest, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Springbok, Duiker, steenbok, Klipspringer and Rehantilope ago.

Due to the aggressive buffalo walking in this area has now been prohibited. Therefore, this game reserve with its low undergrowth the advantage that it is possible from the car watch the animals very well.
