Moving Anthropology Student Network ( MASN ) is a transnational network founded in 2005 for students of cultural and / or social anthropology ( ethnology).

Content

The basis for MASN forms the cultural and social anthropology ( ethnology). The moving aspect of the name ' MASN ' to indicate the dynamics within the network. The term student is regarded in this context in a broader sense, in the network of mutual exchange of information between interested parties should - which can freely take part of a mandatory technical training - graduate or student of anthropology will be maintained. Thus MASN offers space to anthropological activities, experiences, ideas and information across borders to share and discuss. Since the interaction basis is applied on a democratic basis, the network lives of the individual initiatives of the participants.

In the year 2009 were more than 1,650 participants from about 80 countries are included in the statistics, so it has grown into one of the largest anthropological networks of this kind.

In addition to activities on the World Wide Web it comes through projects to interactions. Central here are the transnational MASN conferences, which are scheduled a year in another country in the network program. Here lectures, discussions, workshops and social programs are organized by participants. These conferences are designed to provide space for scientific discussions and the presentation of recent research and represent a link between training and practice. Furthermore, critical views on the role and benefits of Anthropology in companies to be replaced, and sought in this regard for solutions together. Conferences were held in Austria, Croatia, 2006, 2007 and 2010 in Poland, 2007 in Germany, 2008 in Italy and Slovenia, and 2010 in Ireland 2005.

The open and dynamic nature of the Moving Anthropology Student Network and through its reputation to organize serious projects, got it from the European Association of Social Anthropologists ( EASA) the offer, attach itself to them as a student association. Such embedding in an anthropological institution would have to provide centralized administrative structures made ​​necessary. MASN shall be taken on a democratic basis since its inception through voluntary motivation and self-initiative of the participants. Because of concerns that the spontaneous and versatile interactions would be reduced by centralized administrative structures, embedding did not materialize. However, as the 6.MASN Conference ( 19 to 24 August 2008) project partnerships and mutual support at conferences emerged in Osilnic / Slovenia with the 10.EASA Conference ( 26 to 30 August 2008) in Ljubljana / Slovenia. As well as the 8.MASN Conference ( 20 to 22 August 2010) with the 11.EASA Conference ( 24 to 27 August 2010) in Maynooth / Ireland.

History

MASN

On the origin of MASN helped the attention of two cultural and socio- anthropological students of the University of Vienna. They learned at the 8th EASA Conference ( 8 to 12 September 2004) of ' roaming Anthropology '. This network of students of anthropology and ethnology from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia, organized transnational conferences. Furthermore, they came in contact with the annual German-speaking " Anthropology Symposium of students " and other small transnational seminars such as the "Mediterranean Ethnological Summer School " ( MESS). With the will to form a transnational network for anthropology students organized the two encoders with other Viennese students for a coordination meeting. This approximately 20 students met from six European countries from 4 to 6 February 2005 in Vienna. Result of this coordination meeting was the establishment of transnational network MASN - Moving Anthropology Student Network. This created certain aspirations for Moving Anthropology Student Network:

  • Education communicative structures: creation of a network to transmit information. This allows the exchange of messages in different countries, institutions and ' students '. Space for discussion, which no longer have to be bound to space and time.
  • Planning of conferences and meetings: In addition to the virtual exchanges are organized gatherings. Here, students come together from different regions of the world to give lectures and workshops to lead discussions and to organize other creative activities. This framework provides the direct exchange of experience and anthropological knowledge.

The first MASN conference was held from November 3 to 6, 2005 in Ottenstein, Lower Austria. A Viennese MASN group was responsible for the organization and care. The momentum of the four-day conference on Connecting Europe - Transcending Borders with participating students and lecturers from ten different European countries, tempted to organize more conferences.

MASN -Austria

In parallel, there was in the process of creation MASN in Vienna establishing the association Moving Anthropology Social Network Austria ( MASN -Austria), a Cultural and Social Anthropology Centre of Excellence and Networking Office. This is another initiative of the localized in Austria MASN - actors, which also organized the foundation stone -laying coordination meeting and the first MASN conference. Since MASN -Austria is working on future prospects for social and cultural anthropological work on the realization of trans -national projects as well as socio-critical and innovative ideas how to put initiatives that go beyond the scope of activities of the established scientific institutions.

In addition to the transnational conferences, it also comes in a smaller scale or regionally activities. So four more coordination meetings were held. Regional MASN centers, such as MASN -Austria, emerged, which organize regular events or meetings and carry out projects and support.

  • Ethnocineca provides a unique in Vienna film retrospective to deal with cultural and socio- anthropological themes represents the event is organized annually free of charge by students of cultural and social anthropology about the association MASN -Austria. In addition to the film showcase the Ethnocineca also organizes a monthly film club, whose main concern is to give room for discussion and critical reflection on the free documentary.
  • Spring Water Festival 2009, the Information, art and cultural event for the elixir of life was on the 26th - 28th June 2009 in Vienna celebrated at several venues. It is part of the project AquaAnthropos, which is composed of the European Conference 2008 spring water and spring water festival 2009.
  • Shah Rukh Khan and Global Bollywood, September 30 bis October 2, 2010 organized by the University of Vienna in partnership with MASN -Austria this international conference on the global expression of Shah Rukh Khan and Bollywood.
