Moy Castle

Moy Castle is a ruined castle on the Scottish Hebridean island of Mull. It lies in the south of the island at the bay Loch Buie. 1971 Moy Castle was inducted into the Scottish monument lists in category A. In addition, the entire facility is classified as a Scheduled Monument. Today's castle ruin is considered a major example of Scottish castles dating from the 15th century and could deliver between the 15th and 18th century through archaeological investigations an important contribution to understanding the social and economic structure in western Scotland.

History

Moy Castle possibly dates from the 14th century, although the bulk of the preserved ruins today is probably dated to the early 15th century. Builder of the castle, which later played a role in the religious wars of the 17th century, may have been Hector Reaganach Maclean, 1st Laird of Lochbuie. In the following time Moy Castle served as the headquarters of the line of the Clan MacLean of Lochbuie. Around 1700 were still several buildings added. Probably the building is no longer inhabited regularly since 1752. In 1773, Samuel Johnson and James Boswell visited Moy Castle. Moy Castle appeared in 1945 in the British film I know where I'm going on.
