Mporokoso

Mporokoso, also Mumpolokoso, is a small town with 3,491 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ) in the Northern Province of Zambia.

Mporokoso is located 1150 km north of Lusaka and 169 kilometers west of Kasama close to the Mweru - Wantipa Lake, but are beyond the Mporokosoberge belonging geologically to Bangweulubassin. The town is the seat of administration of the same name, very sparsely populated district with 73 929 inhabitants ( 2000 census ).

Social

Mporokoso has mainly written November 1998 to March 1999 story, 25,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo fled there from the fighting of the Civil War and had to be supplied by the UNHCR. The refugee camps Mwange located 34 kilometers to the west, but the city was the logistical center of UN aid, which has greatly improved after serious supply problems and uprisings in the camp whose infrastructure.

From the paved road Mansa - Nchelenge a gravel road continues to Mporokoso.

In Mporokoso there is quite a large hospital with trained doctors that actually supplies the whole, very large district. There are schools and a market.

Tourism

Mporokoso is a way station on the way to Nsumbu National Park and 95 km away to the waterfalls of the river Kalungwishi. These are the Lumangwe Falls, Chimpepefälle, Kabwelumafälle, Kundabwikufälle and Mumbulumafälle. Mporokoso lies on the River Chisenga, a tributary of the Kalungwishi. The Kapumafälle the river Mutoloshi are two kilometers from the Agrarian Training Centre. Furthermore, there are about 40 kilometers from the small but high Lupupafälle the river Mukubwe. 24 km south-east there are the 15-meter high Pulefälle the river (western ) Luangwa. The surrounding area is dominated by cassava and banana fields and Dambo.

History

In the nearby town Mbereshi is one of the oldest churches in Zambia. It was built in 1900 by missionaries of the London Missionary Society.
