The Bangkok Metro ( Thai: รถไฟฟ้า มหานคร, pronunciation: [ red faj fá ː mahǎ ː Nak ʰ ɔ ː n] - literally as: " all urban electric train "; short รถไฟฟ้า MRI pronunciation: [ red faj fá ː em ʔa ː t ʰ i ː ], also colloquially: รถไฟ ใต้ดิน, [Red faj Taj din ] - "Subway " or MRI) is Bangkok's subway system. It was built by the Bangkok Metro Co. Ltd. ( BMCL ) under the supervision of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand ( MRTA ). Lines

Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line

The construction of the first line, the official name Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line ( "Celebration of the royal patronage " ), commonly known as " Blue Line ", began in 1999. She is 21 kilometers long and has 18 stops, which is currently located between Bang Sue and Hua Lamphong Station. Interchanges to the Skytrain exist in Si Lom / Saladaeng ( at the intersection of Rama IV and Silom Road), Sukhumvit / Asok ( at the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Soi 21 Asok ) and Chatuchak / Mo Chit at the Chatuchak Weekend Market. The capacity is approximately 40,000 passengers per direction per hour.

The line was finally opened for a limited public test run on 13 April 2004 By multiple delays. The official opening took place on July 3, 2004 at 19:19 clock instead of by King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. Passengers reported that the subway system was too busy within the next half hour to full capacity.

In planning extensions north to Tha Phra and Charansanitwongse, south to Bang Khae, with one possible embodiment of a ring route. Currently, the planning for this is not yet complete, first land purchases and expropriations but are made. With a completion is expected in 2015.

Other lines

Planned are the Orange Line ( Bang Kapi - Samsen ) and the Purple Line ( Bangyai - Phra Nanklao - Bangsue ). The latter is currently in the bidding phase. Will fund the cost of 36 billion baht ( 720 million euros ) for the 23 -kilometer route through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. However, the cost has been exceeded by the bids.

The system

To keep open the possibility to operate routes together with the Bangkok Skytrain, the two vehicle types are very similar. Vehicles manufactured by Siemens AG in Austria go automatically.

A three-car unit is 65.1 m long and 3.12 m wide and weighs 107.0 tonnes empty. The track width is 1435 mm ( standard gauge ). The trains sourced from the power rail 750 V DC and reach a maximum of 80 km / h One unit consists of two railcars and a sidecar ( BB wheel arrangement 2'2 Bo'Bo ). The maximum starting acceleration is 1.3 m / s ², the braking deceleration 1.0 m / s ². One unit has 126 seats and 760 standing (6 persons / m²), for a total 886 seats. Incidents

On January 17, 2005, there was an accident in which at 9.30 clock during the morning rush hour in the station Thailand Cultural Center (Thailand Cultural Centre ) an empty train rolled up backwards on one with 700 passengers almost fully occupied train. Here, 237 people were injured. After a two-week interruption of the operation was resumed on February 1.
