The MS Science is an inland waterway vessel - suitable for each year of science - for several months a year with exhibits travels through Germany, are expected to improve understanding of science and research. In the remaining time the ship sails as a "normal " motor cargo ship named Jenny and at times as an exhibition ship with commercial exhibitions.

Particulars of ship

The ship was built in 1969 on the Elfring shipyard in Haren ( Ems) as Johann Welker ship and initially set for a short period of shipyard own Elka shipping company as Vera in driving. After a sale in the Netherlands, the ship was as Van Uden 24 on the road, since 1987, it continues as Jenny. The ship was originally 85 meters long and was extended in 1989 to 105 meters. In 2012 it was reduced to 100 meters.

It is powered by a six-cylinder MWM engine with an output of 809 kW. In addition, the ship has a bow thruster. The wheelhouse is adjustable in height.

The hold of the ship, which can be used is about 75 meters long and 7.8 meters wide. Of the total area of almost 600 m² 530 m² good for exhibitions and events are available. The rest of the land is needed for the stairs to the hold, a toilet and a café in the rear area as well as an emergency exit in the front of the cargo hold. In addition, as usable range is a part of the surface on the hatch covers are available. The usable area is approximately 355 sqm.

Owner of the ship is the family Scheubner. The ship was chartered to 2011 outside of the time in which it was traveling as a scientific or exhibition ship as Partikulierschiff of the MSG eG based in Würzburg.

Exhibition ship MS Science

By 2011, the MS Wissenschaft was a project of the nonprofit GmbH Science in Dialogue. The project was financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and in a few years from different foundations. Since 2012, the BMBF organizer of MS is Science, Science in Dialogue realized the exhibition ship as general contractor. The majority of the collection is contributed by the scientific institutes and facilities.

The use of inland waterways as a science ship goes back to an idea of ​​the University of Bremen as " Geoschiff " sent the ship in 2002 when traveling. Since the exhibition on the inland waterways of the visitors arrived well, took science in the dialogue, the concept and implemented annually since 2003 an exhibition on the ship under the relevant scientific year. In the early years, the ship was named after the theme of the Year of Science, since 2006, undertaken by the Jenny her exhibition traveling under the name " MS Wissenschaft ".

For use as a MS science the barge is rebuilt every year. The cargo space is in this case to a showroom which can be reached via a mounted in front of the wheelhouse stairs. In an exhibition space repurposed cargo space is located next to the exhibition, a reception area and a small bistro.

In 2010, Jenny was as an exhibition ship under Germany initiative - named the Land of Ideas "Selected Landmark 2010 ".
