MSDOS.SYS

The kernel of a PC-compatible DOS is stored in the file MSDOS.SYS in MS -DOS or PC DOS and DR IBMDOS.COM in DOS and is located in the root directory of the file system.

MSDOS.SYS initialize under MS- DOS from IO.SYS and loads specified in CONFIG.SYS device driver and settings. If CONFIG.SYS is missing or is otherwise indicated MSDOS.SYS then starts the command interpreter COMMAND.COM in the root directory of the boot drive.

Under PC DOS, which is a further developed by IBM MS- DOS with the same code base, ie the IBMDOS.COM file and is initialized by IBMBIO.COM, but is otherwise identical.

Under DR DOS file to version 3:41 DRBDOS.SYS and version 5.0 is also called IBMDOS.COM. It includes those derived from CP / M BDOS kernel and is fully compatible only with Novell DOS 7 to PC DOS and hence to MS -DOS. The kernel out of the equivalent of IO.SYS is called out, which (up to version 3:41 ) or IBMBIO.COM bears the file name DRBIOS.SYS (version 5.0).

Under Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows Me MSDOS.SYS was integrated into IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS was from a configuration file that allows the boot options for the DOS-based Windows.
