Mueang Surat Thani District

Amphoe Mueang Surat Thani ( Thai: อำเภอ เมือง สุราษฎร์ธานี ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district ) in the central part of the province Surat Thani. The Surat Thani Province is located in the southern region of Thailand.

The district Amphoe Mueang Surat Thani includes the provincial capital of Surat Thani.

Geography

Surat Thani is located on the east coast on the Gulf of Thailand in the middle of a fertile plain at the mouth of the river Tapi. The distance to the capital Bangkok is more than 640 kilometers.

Neighboring districts are ( from east clockwise): Amphoe the Kanchanadit, Ban Na San, Ban Na Doem and Phunphin. All Amphoe located in the province of Surat Thani.

To the east of the circle of Maenam Thathong ( Thathong River ) represents the natural border with the neighboring district Kanchanadit, the border with Phunphin is partly the western arm of the Maenam Tapi. The Khun Thale is a small lake in the center of the circle. The Khao Tha Phet Wildlife Reserve (English: " Khao Tha Phet Non -hunting Area" ) protects an area of 4.65 square kilometers on a hill south of the city of Surat Thani.

The Khun Thale swamp in the south of the county is the headwaters of two small rivers that meander through the town of Khlong Makham Tia and Khlong Tha Kup.

History

Surat Thani has been inhabited since ancient times, as Palaeolithic tool finds prove. The small city ( Mueang ) Chaiya not far from Surat Thani was an important city of the kingdom of Srivijaya, possibly even at times the capital.
