Muga (river)

BW

La Muga is a river in northern Catalonia.

The Muga rises in the Pyrenees on the Pla de la Muga ( 1,186 m) in the Montnegre Mountains south of the French border and into the Bay of Roses, on the Mediterranean Sea. The river length is 58 km and the average flow velocity 3.34 m³ / s ( measurement location: Castelló d' Empúries ).

The Muga is on the way to the plains of Alt Empordà, from the creek L' Arnera and other small tributaries from the axial zone of the Pyrenees, such as the area of the Roc de Frausa, the Serra de les Salines and the Albera fed. After 5.5 km flow path through deep valleys, the Muga is interrupted by a dam in the gorge of Boadella. The Muga then reached 52.5 kilometers downhill the projected nature wetland Empordà Marshes ( Parc Natural dels Empordà Marshes ) in the region Empordà in Catalonia and flows together with the river Fluvia into the Mediterranean.

In October 1940, the Muga caused a catastrophic flood in the Empordà level.
