Mukwonago is a village in Waukesha County and a small part in Walworth County in the southeast of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. In 2000, Mukwonago had 6868 inhabitants.

Mukwonago is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.

Geography

Mukwonago Village has a size of 12.5 km ² (4.8 mi ²). Of this, 12.1 km ² (4.7 mi ²) of land and 0.4 km ² ( 0.1 mi ²) of water. Nearby Cities include West Bend or New Berlin, Muskego in the northwest and southwest of East Troy. Mukwonago is located right on the Fox River, which empties into the Phantom Lake. Mukwonago also has its own exit off Interstate 43 Milwaukee Beloit.

Mukwonago has about 13,000 inhabitants, in Mukwonago Village and approximately 6,000 in Mukwonago Town approximately 6,000 inhabitants.

History

Mukwonago goes back to Native American origins. The Potowatomi Indians had their headquarters here from the bear clan. Mukwonago Mequanego was initially called, ie the place where the bear is ( " Place of the bear" ). Over time Mequanego was renamed in Mukwonago. In 1844 the name was officially adopted Mukwonago.
