Múlagöng

The Ólafsfjarðargöng or Múlagöng is a road tunnel in the north of Iceland, not far from Ólafsfjörður on Ólafsfjörðurvegur. The one-lane, lighted tunnel is 3400 meters long and connects Ólafsfjörður with Dalvik and Akureyri. The tunnel crosses under the 400 -meter high Ólafsfjarðarmúli that separates the two fjords Ólafsfjörður and Eyjafjörður. From this is also the alternative tunnel name Múlagöng. The tunnel was opened on 1 March 1991. Before the opening of the tunnel was no direct road connection from Ólafsfjörður after Dalvik and especially Akureyri. The only link led from the west over the Siglufjörðurvegur and, branching off on a gravel not winter safe pass road, a detour ( from Akureyri ) of more than 150 kilometers.
