Multifaceted reflector

MR16 (also MR-16 ) is a standard format of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ' MR ' stands for ' multifaceted reflector ' ( = multi - faceted reflector).

Identification

MR16 lamps can be identified by their labeling with three letters ( as per ANSI). The letters identifies a specific type of lamp, followed by the power lamp shape and beam angle. The number 16 refers to the diameter of " 16 eighths " inches ( 16/8 " or 51 mm).

Most MR16 lamps with GU5.3 pin base are made for 12 volts, the lamps for 230/240 volts usually have a GU10 - pin base, to prevent confusion.

Dimensions

Standard halogen MR16 GU5.3 socket with: usually about 50 mm diameter, length of the vitreous usually about 38 mm

Use

MR16 which occurs both in LED lamps and halogen lamps. The LED version often lack the typical multi faceted reflector. For the smaller lamp designs often MR11 or MR8 standard is used in which also the pins closer together ( GU4 )

Characteristics

The following ANSI codes are used to characterize different combinations of performance and angle for the MR16 lamps.

  • ESX: 20 watts, 10 degrees ( ° 20MR16/10 )
  • BAB: 20 watts, 40 degrees ( ° 20MR16/40 )
  • EXT: 50 watts, 15 degrees ( ° 50MR16/15 )
  • EXZ: 50 watts, 25 degrees ( ° 50MR16/25 )
  • EXN: 50 watts, 40 degrees ( ° 50MR16/40 )
  • FPA: 65 watts, 15 degrees ( ° 65MR16/15 )
  • FPC: 65 watts, 25 degrees ( ° 65MR16/25 )

  • EYJ: 75 watts, 25 degrees ( ° 75MR16/25 )
  • EYC: 75 watts, 40 degrees ( ° 75MR16/40 )

Note: MR16 lamps are available in many other variants and markings, the codes used may also differ between the various suppliers.
