Multiplex (movie theater)

Multiplex Cinema ( multi- cinema, derived from the Latin multiplico ), also shortened to multiplex, is the name for a large cinema with several rooms where parallel variety (Latin multiplex ) film programs can be shown.

Construction

Characteristic of multiplex cinemas are large-scale canvases and arenas like structure of the halls with steep seating arrangement. Most such cinema includes several thousand seats and a variety of entertainment venues, such as cafes, bars as well as shops.

History

The world's first multiplex cinema was in 1979 with 18 rooms in Toronto. 1985 for the first time in Europe, such a cinema was 70 km away from London realized by United Cinemas International ( UCI). In 1988, the largest up to that point multi-screen cinema was built with 25 halls and 7,000 seats in Brussels. The Kinepolis Brussels valid claims to be the first real multiplex in the world. The world's largest multiplex cinema could currently be the AMC Ontario Mills in Ontario, California, which is equipped with 30 screens.

UCI opened the first multiplex cinema in Germany near Cologne in October 1990. Already in 1991 followed by other multiplex cinemas in Ruhr-Park mall in Bochum, the Cinedom in Media Park Cologne, and the Cinemax theaters in Hanover and Essen.

The multiplex cinema replaced the box cinema of the 1970s.

Germany

Known multiplex cinema chains in Germany are the market leader Cinestar and Cinemax, UCI cinema world or Kinopolis. Cineplex is an umbrella organization that gives many medium-sized companies a name.

By the year 2000 the number of multiplexes in Germany rose to a total of 128. These have 9 screens on average.

The market share of multiplex cinemas in Germany is steadily increasing. From 1996 to 2005, the audience share of about 15 % increased to 47%, the proportion of total theatrical sales in the same period from 17% to 50% interest. Currently the largest multiplex cinema in Germany is the Cinemax in Essen with 5,370 places in 16 rooms. By comparison, the largest cinema in the silent film era, the New York Roxy Theatre, summed up with just one room over 6,200 visitors. Also, once the largest German and largest European cinema, the Ufa-Palast Hamburg, counted with a single hall seats 2,665.

Austria

The largest ( Multiplex ) cinema Austria is located in Vienna UCI cinema world " Millennium City" ( Millennium Tower complex) with 21 halls and 3,524 seats. The largest cinema chain has 17 multiplexes and 13 other single or multi- hall cinema the Constantin Film -Holding belonging Cineplexx chain.

Belgium

The largest cinema chains in Belgium called Kinepolis and UGC. Kinepolis has two very large multiplex cinema with 25 halls and 7,000 seats in Brussels and Antwerp in operation.

Luxembourg

In Luxembourg there are two multiplex cinemas.

Czechia

In the Czech Republic there are 19 multiplex cinemas, which have a market share of 64 % and a revenue share of 80 % of the Czech cinema market. A 20 Cinema in Prague closed end of November 2008 as the date the first and only multiplex cinema in the Czech Republic.
