Multitronic

Multitronic is the name of the car manufacturer Audi for a continuous fully automatic transmission, which according to the principle of VARIOmatic / CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission ) is constructed. The Vario -matic transmission was previously (eg Ford Fiesta, Fiat Punto and DAF 30) applied only in two-wheelers and far weaker car.

Due to the continuous translation and the use of an adaptive parameter control the economic speed range with the highest torque is used extensively. Thus, the Multitronic allows compared to conventional manual transmissions better acceleration, and by controlling the ratio close to the optimum operating a mostly lower fuel consumption. Another feature of the spreading of about 6:1, which (about 4:1 to 5:1) is significantly higher than values of most of the CVT transmission.

The jointly developed by Audi with the LuK Group Multitronic was first used in 1999 in the Audi A6 C5 ( Typ 4B ). In the meantime, can be equipped with it Audi A4, Audi A5, Audi A7 and the less powerful Audi A8. The maximum transmissible torque has been over the years of 300 Nm (2002) increased to 400 Nm (2006 ), which was founded in 2007 but reduced to 380 Nm. Since model year 2009, a variant of 400 Nm is installed in the Audi A4 2.7 TDI. The Multitronic is currently used only in the front-wheel drive vehicles.

Components

The Multitronic consists of the variator, which consists of the conical variator and the link chain is (see picture), the control system and a multi-plate clutch.

Operation

In the variator runs the wide link chain between two conical variator. By changing the distance of the variator opposite the plate link chain moves in the axis a to the inside and on the other axis to the outside at different radii. This results in a continuous change of the transmission ratio. The controller accepts a variety of signals and measurements, this compares with the optimal values and accordingly changed the gear ratio. The separate multi-plate clutch is responsible for the connection between engine and gearbox and is mainly needed for starting. It is executed twice ( starting forward, starting backwards).

Trivia

The term Multitronic 1968 is used in Star Trek for a complex computer.
