Multnomah County, Oregon

Multnomah County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oregon. It has 735 334 inhabitants ( as of 2010), so it is the most populous county of the state. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Portland, the largest city in Oregon.

History

The name of the county goes back to Chief Multnomah.

Geography

The county has an area of 1206 square kilometers; of which 79 square kilometers ( 6.53 percent) of water. This makes it the smallest county of the state.

According to the census of 2000, there were 660 486 people in the county. There were 272 098 households and 152 102 families. The population density was 586 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.16 % White, 5.67 % African American, 1.03 % Native American, 5.70 % Asian, 0.35% Pacific Islander residents from the and 4.03% percent from other ethnic groups; 4.07% were descended from two or more races. 7.51 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 272 098 households out of which 26.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 40.90 % were married couples living together, 10.80% had a female householder with no husband. 44.10 % were non-families. 32.50 % of all households and 8.60 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.03.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 22.30 % under the age of 18, 10.30 % from 18 to 24, 33.80 % from 25 to 44 years, 22.50% between 45 and 64 years and 11.10% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.00 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.10 males.

The median income for a household was $ 41,278, and the median income for a family was $ 51,118. Males have a median income of $ 36,036, women $ 29,337. The per capita income was $ 22,606. 12.70% of the population and 8.20% of families are below the poverty line. 15.40% of those under age 18 and 9.80% were 65 years or older.
