Mumbai City district

The district Mumbai City ( Marathi: मुंबई जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. Capital of the district is Mumbai. The district consists of Alt- Mumbai ( Bombay Old ) and some districts in the south and center of the city of Mumbai. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 3,085,411 people.

Population

The urban population makes up 100 percent of the total population. For the entire district consists of various parts of the city of Mumbai. A vast majority of the population are Hindus. But the district is strongly religiously mixed. In 2001, of 3,338,031 inhabitants 2.11975 million Hindus ( 63.50 percent), 734 484 Muslims ( 22.00 per cent), Buddhists 161 417 ( 4.84 per cent), 159 021 Jains (4.76 percent) and 106 240 Christians ( 3.18 percent ). Mumbai City has a high literacy rate. At the last census it amounted to a total of 89.21 percent. For men, it is slightly higher than that for women ( 86.45 percent) with 91.48 percent. Striking is the high surplus of men. In 1000 only 832 men women come. In this relationship, but is a change in progress., In 2001, only 777 women came to 1,000 men - while there are already 914 girls today to 1,000 boys in the 0-6 year old people.

Demographics

As elsewhere in India, the population for decades grew rapidly in the district of Mumbai City until 2001. Since then, the number of inhabitants decreases due to migration to the suburbs. The decrease was between the last two censuses 7.57 percent, or more than 250,000 people.

History

The district was created on 1 October 1990 from parts of the former district of Mumbai. The northern suburbs have been to Mumbai Suburban District.
