Mumbai Suburban district

The district Mumbai Suburban ( Marathi: मुंबई उपनगर जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. Capital of the district is Bandra (East ). The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 9,356,962 people.

Population

The urban population makes up 100 percent of the total population. For the entire district consists of urbanized suburbs of the city of Mumbai. A vast majority of the population are Hindus. But the district is strongly religiously mixed. In 2001, of 8,640,419 inhabitants, 5,953,475 Hindus ( 68.90 per cent), Muslims 1,488,987 ( 17.23 percent), 464 354 Buddhists ( 5.37 percent), 340 166 Christians (3.94 percent) and 319 339 Jains (3.70 percent).

History

The district was created on 1 October 1990 from parts of the former district of Mumbai. More specifically, from the north of the city of Mumbai and the suburbs north of it.
