The lake is one of the most visited lakes in Baden- Württemberg, since it lies directly on the Black Forest High Road.

He is flanked on the west, north and east by steep, wooded mountain slopes and has a circumference of about 800 meters. To the west the lake shore rises up to the cat's head (1123 m above sea level. NHN ) and northwards to Hornisgrinde, the highest 1163 meter mountain in the northern Black Forest. Only the south shore of Mummelsees ( almost) flat, there is the mountain Mummelsee and the nearby St. Michael's Chapel.

The name of the Mummelsees goes to the community Seebach back to the white water lilies, called mumble in the vernacular, which occurred earlier in number there. However, in botany, the yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea ) is called Mummel.

Restaurants and commercial businesses

Aided by the progress of the Black Forest High Road, the lake was interesting for tourism. A larger building with a hotel, two restaurants, a grocery and souvenir shop and a pedal boat rentals are located right next to the large visitor parking. Immediately afterwards there is a shopping building where souvenirs and homemade black forest foods such as ham, sausage and cheese can be purchased. Several times a day there is baked traditional wood -fired bread in a wood fire oven.

The hotel building was largely destroyed on 5 May 2008 by fire. The cause was probably negligent arson. The hotel was rebuilt after the fire in the Black Forest style again and opened on 26 March 2010, the floor space increased from 2385 square feet to 3690 square feet.

The Mummelsee in the literature

  • Around the lake once lying still without road connection in deep solitude entwine several shots. According to legend, lived in the lake a mermaid, the assistance provided to people at night and danced with them, sang and played.
  • The legends inspired Eduard Moerike to his poem The spirits on Mummelsee.
  • Grimmelshausenmuseum let his Simplicissimus of underwater inhabitants away into the lake and dive to the center of the earth. The case described system of water connections from the surface to the center of the earth could have been inspired by the Platonic myth about the fate of the soul after death be ( dialogue Phaedo 107d - 115a ).
  • The editor and legends collectors August Schnezler told in three poems: The Mummelsee, Lilies and Mummelsees revenge fabulous happenings around the lake, read in his books of poetry.

Mummelsee trail and Art Trail

To the Mummelsee leads a largely unspoiled natural trail, which has, despite the high frequented by visitors numerous constrictions and is characterized by distinctive tree roots. Moss and lichen- covered boulders and mighty giant trees along the circuitous path to emphasize the closeness to nature as well as the lake shore. Since the trail was maintained largely gentle landscape in the past, he is one of the few developed and hardly seem romantic destinations in the Black Forest. Along the circular path of modern artists were installed a few years ago works of art.
