Mund

Mouth is a place of community in Naters Brig district in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The mountain village is located north of the Rhone on the southern slope of the Lötschberg mountain, between Visp and Brig

On 1 January 2013, the until then independent municipality merged with the municipality to municipality Birgisch Naters.

Mouth is the only place in Switzerland, where the herb saffron is grown and cultivated. Saffron was probably brought by indigenous mercenaries, which contributed in a foreign war service, in the 15th century the village. The oldest written evidence of the Munder Safran date from the 19th century. Since 1979, the Safran guild promotes the cultivation of the herb in oral, controlled harvesting and advertises the saffron village of mouth.

History

Mouth is first written records in 1259 and was part of the parish Naters. Getting older is a coat of arms of the mouth, which bears the number 1212 and is reminiscent of a legendary battle with intruders above mouth. Mouth had been awarded at that time part of the county Wallis, who belonged since 999 the bishop of Sion and mostly noblemen from the region as a fief.

1348 a chapel was built in the mouth, probably to bury the dead of the plague. 1727 mouth separates from the mother parish Naters after 1721 a church in baroque style was built in place of the former chapel. 1962 to 1964 the present church is built in the same place. Only the tower of the first church still stands. 2006, the church was reopened after renovations because of asbestos.

Mouth was since 1355 part of the Zehnden Naters. Your independent from the needle position is, however, not recognized until 1420.

1427 was built the church by mouth ransom by the Lords of Raron who had obtained by marriage the rule over mouth. From this period also the tithe blame, where the Safran Museum is housed.
