Muness Castle

Muness Castle is a ruined castle on the Scottish Shetland island of Unst. 1971 Muness Castle was inducted into the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A. Moreover, it is classified as a Scheduled Monument. It is the most northerly castle on the British Isles.

History

Laurence Bruce, a descendant of Robert the Bruce and half-brother of Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney, of Scalloway Castle was built a few years later on Mainland, Muness Castle was built in 1598. Bruce was previously Laird in Perthshire, but fled to the Shetland Islands, after he had killed an adversary. For the construction of Andrew Crawford was obliged, among other things, Scalloway Castle, built later, which is why both buildings are similar. As Bruce Laird was responsible for taxation in its area of ​​effect. Among the inhabitants of the islands Bruce was unpopular after he had manipulated the reference weights of its scales in order to achieve a higher tax profit. Bruce was taken in Tingwall the process by which a consequence he was deprived of his status.

1627 Muness Castle was burned by Dutch privateers from Dunkirk. In 1713 the Dutch East India Company used the building for storage of salvaged cargo of the ship Rynenburgh. In 1750 Muness Castle was ultimately abandoned. The attic were destroyed and the stones recovered probably used for the construction of the boundary wall.
