Municipalities of Cuba

The term " municipality " means, in Cuba, the local authority or geographically limited administrative unit below the level of the province. The 15 Cuban provinces are divided according to the law enacted in the wake of the general Administrative Reform Act No 1304 of 3 July 1976 in 168 municipios, associated with the Isla de la Juventud as a special municipality.

In its basic properties, these administrative units have partly large differences: The largest area of ​​the municipality, at the same time with the smallest population and the lowest population density, the marshes of the Cienaga de Zapata ( 9163 Residents, 4320 km ², 2.2 inhabitants / km ²).
