Municipalities of the Republic of Macedonia

Macedonia is in 80 Opštini (plural, singular Opština; macedonian Општини or Општина; Albanian determined: komuna, indeterminate: commune ) divided, the local authorities are satisfy a mayor and hold a council. In the field of the urban agglomeration of the capital Skopje form 10 Opštini together the City of Skopje, a local authority with special status.

To only statistical - without administrative - Macedonia purposes is further divided into eight statistical regions, each group several adjacent Opštini.

History

The Socialist Republic of Macedonia within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had insisted last from 34 Opštini before the country's independence.

In September 1996, Macedonia was reorganized into a total of 123 Opštini. Simultaneously with the new smaller Opštini 8 statistical regions were created.

The new Territorial Administration Act of 11 August 2004, the state was divided into 84 Opštini now. The previous 123 Opštini were partially summarized, but the number of Opštini were in Greater Skopje increased from eight to ten.

2013 were to Opština Kičevo those added by Drugovo, Oslomej, Vraneštica and Zajas, which they were dissolved.
