Muong people

The Muong are an ethnic minority in Vietnam.

There are about 1.3 million Muong. The vast majority of them live in the provinces of Hòa Bình, Nghe An, Ninh Bình, Phú Thọ, Sơn La, Thanh Hoa, Vinh Phu, Yen Bai in the mountains of North Vietnam. Several thousand Muong live in southern Vietnam.

The Muong are closely related to the ethnic Vietnamese. Some anthropologists believe that they are ethnic Vietnamese, but were influenced by the relative isolation in the mountains less of the Chinese civilization.

The religion of the Muong includes Chinese, Vietnamese and animist elements.
