Muqatta'at

As Mysterious letters is called the Koran vonangestellte letters whose meaning is unknown.

Of the 114 suras of the Koran start 29 after the preceding basmala with one or a group of letters that are not connected to each other, but can be read as individual letters of the alphabet. These letters are known in the literature as "the openings of the Suras ' ( fawātiḥ as- Suwar )," the first of the suras " ( awā'il as- Suwar )," the separate letters "(al- huruf al - muqaṭṭa ʿ a or al Muqaṭṭa - ʿ at). Western scholars of Islam call it consistently " the mysterious letters". Frequently occurring combinations of letters, for example, Alif -Lam Mim at the beginning of Sura 2, 3, 29, 30, 31 and 32, or Alif - Lām -RA at the beginning of Sura 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15 The total number of letters including the surahs which begin with a letter as a heading, is 78

In the Arab world, the use of the mysterious letters is not uncommon as a given name. Examples include Yasin (Surah 36) or Taha (Surah 20).
