Murbach

Murbach is a French municipality with 140 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. She is a member of the Communauté de communes de la Région de Guebwiller.

Geography

It lies at the foot of the Grand Ballon ( Grand Ballon ) in the Vosges Massif and is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges. The nearest neighboring community is Buhl.

The place Murbach with the rest of its Romanesque monastery church is a station of the Roman road of Alsace.

History

Saint Pirmin, a missionary, founded a Benedictine abbey in the year 728, where later the village was Murbach. From the former monastery church from the 12th century, today is only the chorus with two side choirs, two towers and the transept. According to the Bauschulen of Hirsau and Cluny Abbey, the choir has a flat statements and no apse. The mighty nave was canceled in 1738 to make a baroque building space that was never started. The holy Pirmin dedicated a statue.
