Muriel Box

Muriel Box ( born September 22, 1905 in Tolworth as Violette Muriel Baker, † 19 May 1991, London) was a British screenwriter and director.

Life and career

Muriel Box began in 1927 with her work in the film business. Initially she worked as a script girl at British International Pictures for Anthony Asquith and began in 1935 with her husband, Sydney Box, to write screenplays. First, they wrote several short pieces for theater groups. The breakthrough came with the screenplay for Compton Bennett's The Seventh Veil, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Box also was the first woman to win the Oscar in this category.

From 1949 she wrote often own screenplays and also acted as a director of comedies and thrillers in appearance. Altogether she wrote 24 screenplays and led 15 times directing.
