Murmashi

Murmaschi (Russian Мурмаши ) is an urban-type settlement in Murmansk Oblast (Russia) with 14,152 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the northern part of the Kola Peninsula, about 20 kilometers southwest of the crow Oblastverwaltungszentrums Murmansk on the right bank of the lower reaches of the Tuloma.

Murmaschi belongs to Rajon Kola and is roughly ten kilometers south-west of the administrative center, the city of Kola.

History

The site was developed in connection with the construction of the projected after the GOELRO plan Nischnetulomskaja - hydro power plant from 1934 onwards for the power supply to an electrified section of the Murmansk railway. The power plant was built by Gulag prisoners. The first turbine was put into operation on 13 January 1937 the entire power station on 11 July 1938.

On November 27, 1938 the location of the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded. The place name to have been derived from the name of the seed Murmasch, who lived at the mouth of the Tuloma before the construction of the hydropower plant.

Economy and infrastructure

Immediately upon the settlement of the hydroelectric power plant is Nischnetulomskaja ( "Lower Tuloma hydroelectric power station " ) with a capacity of 57.2 megawatts. Today's operators is the North -West Russia from several energy suppliers, including KolEnergo, emerged joint-stock company TGK -1 ( TGC -1), which is controlled by Gazprom Energoholdung. There are companies in the construction and forestry, as well as of transport.

In Murmaschi is the sanatorium Laplandija, which was opened in 1937 as a rest home for the North Sea fishermen and today called northernmost spa facility in Russia.

Through the settlement, the road, the Murmansk with its four kilometers south of Murmaschi situated International Airport connects. Through the town and the railway line from the town of Nikel on the Kola leads to the Norwegian border. It crosses the Nischnetulomsker reservoir than a mile above the dam.
