Murray County (Oklahoma)
Murray County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sulphur.
Geography
The County is located in south-central Oklahoma, is about 70 km away from Texas and has an area of 1101 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pontotoc County, Johnston County, Carter County and Garvin County.
History
Murray County was formed on 16 July 1907 as original county of Chickasaw country. It was named after William H. Murray, a president of the Constituent Assembly ( " Constitunional Convention " ) and later governor of Oklahoma.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Murray County 12,623 people in 5,003 households and 3,587 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 80.76 percent White, 1.90 percent African Americans, 11.57 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.16 percent from other races groups; 4.26 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,003 households, 30.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers. 28.3 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent of all households and 12.7 percent of households had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92.
24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 to 24, 25.1 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.5 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,294, and the median income for a family was $ 37,303. Males had a median income of $ 28,381 versus $ 19,727 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,084. 11.1 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
