Murray McCully

Murray Stuart McCully ( born February 19, 1953 in Whangarei, Northland ) is a New Zealand politician.

Biography

After education at Arapohue Primary School and Dargaville High School, he studied law at the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington. After graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ), he was admitted as a barrister and as a solicitor and then worked as a lawyer. In addition, he was managing director of a public relations firm.

His political career began as chairman of the youth organization of the Nationalist Party (Young Nationals ) as well as director of communications at the headquarters of NP. He was also Deputy Chairman of the NP in Auckland Region. In 1987 he was was first elected as a candidate of the New Zealand National Party ( NP ) for Members of the House of Representatives, where he initially to 1996, the constituency of East Coast Bays, and then until 2002, the constituency represented Albany. He was again elected deputy of the House of Representatives in the constituency of West Coast Bays 2002.

In October 1991, he was appointed by Prime Minister Jim Bolger for the first time as Minister of Customs and Associate Minister of Tourism in the government. In a cabinet reshuffle in 1993 he became Minister of Housing. By the end of the term of office of Bolger's successor Jenny Shipley on December 5, 1999 McCully was Minister of Immigration. He also gained a reputation for being one of the main strategists of the NP.

After the victory of the National Party in elections to the House of Representatives in 2008, he was appointed for sports and recreation on 19 November 2008 by Prime Minister John Key to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister. In addition, he was Minister for the Rugby Union World Cup 2011.
