Murshidabad ( Bengali: মুর্শিদাবাদ, Murśidābād ) is a small town in the same district of the Indian state of West Bengal. It lies on the Bhagirathi, a tributary of the Ganges, about 200 km north of Kolkata. The population is around 40,000.

From 1705 to 1773 Murshidabad, which was named after Nawab Murshid Quli the then Khan was the capital of independent Bengal. Are interesting for tourists of Nawab Palace Hazarduari of 1837 and the ruins of Katra Mosque from 1724, in which is the grave of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan. One of the sons of the city is Insha Allah Khan, who is considered a pioneer of Hindi literature.
