History

In the 13th century, fishermen began to settle here. On the fertile soil they began to farm. To this end, they began in the nearby salt pans that belonged to the monastery of Vila Cova das Donas, to extract salt. In a deed of gift to the monastery of Tarouca a Salinenort with names Morrecosa or Mortecosa was named in 1242 for the first time. The nearby town of Pardelhas belonged to the municipality Sandim and was the monastery Vila Cova dutiable while Murtosa was committed to the monastery Arouca. Both places, however, were civilly soon managed together. 1689 belonged Pardelhas then bemposta while Murtosa Estarreja was assigned. Since the administrative reforms of the Liberal revolution in Portugal in 1822 Pardelhas was united with the community Murtosa, which belonged to the circle Estarreja since 1855. 1926 Murtosa was raised a separate circuit and Vila ( town ).

The place was has always been a fishing village that has long been affected by emigration. To live alone in the U.S. city of Newark more Murtosa -born people than in Murtosa itself This led in 2001 to the partnership between the two cities.
